Board Description
Per the ACR Bylaws, the governing body of the ACR shall be the Board of Directors. The board shall supervise, control, and direct the business and affairs of the ACR, its committees, and its publications; shall actively promote its purposes; and shall supervise the disbursement of its funds.
Responsibilities
- Review all board materials to prepare for each quarterly board meeting
- Review materials and vote on action items electronically in between meetings on an added needed basis; this includes reviewing a manuscript/supporting materials, providing comments, and then submitting a vote
- Serve as the board liaison to assigned standing committee, communicate with the committee chair and attend committee meetings (if possible)
- Serve as board shepherds for articles being written by other committees as part of the Pathway to Publication process
The ACR staff is responsible for the administration and project management of all initiatives and programs.
Time Commitments
Board Meetings
The board meets at least quarterly, and members should anticipate spending at least 4 hours reviewing board materials to prepare for each meeting.
- Winter Board Meeting (2-day in-person – usually mid-February)
- Spring Board Meeting (2-day in-person – usually in early to mid-May, and in conjunction with Advocates for Arthritis in Washington, DC – all board members are expected to also participate in Advocates for Arthritis Hill Visits following the board meeting)
- Summer Board Meeting (2-day virtual – usually mid-August)
- Fall Board Meeting (1-day in-person – during ACR Convergence – usually the day of the opening session)
- Additional virtual meetings of the board may be added to calendars on an as-needed basis
Board Liaison Responsibilities
- Will depend on the assigned committee, as committees have monthly or quarterly virtual meetings. Meeting attendance is optional.
Other Responsibilities
- Being BOD shepherd for articles may require several hours of effort throughout the year
Recommended Qualifications
The BOD welcomes all interested volunteers. The organizational priorities and the current BOD member mix would benefit from adding the following perspectives for the next volunteer term: pediatric perspective, early-career perspective, and practice perspective.
Interested participants for this board should have knowledge or experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Strong belief in the mission and vision of the ACR
- Deep understanding of the ACR's mission, programs, and needs of the rheumatology community
- Collaborative spirit
- Strategic thinking skills and mindset
- Willingness to consider ideas outside of the status quo
- Possess curiosity and open-mindedness
- Upholds ethical standards set forth by the ACR and the field of medicine
- Has the bandwidth to be fully engaged in the work of the ACR Board of Directors
- Value diverse perspectives (skills, backgrounds, experiences)
