American College of Rheumatology Marks 50 Years of Progress in Pediatric Rheumatology

ATLANTA – The American College of Rheumatology (ACR) today recognizes 50 years of progress in pediatric rheumatology, highlighting the specialty’s growth in clinical care, research, education, and advocacy for children with rheumatic diseases.
Over the past five decades, pediatric rheumatology has advanced through the efforts of clinicians, researchers, families, and patient advocates committed to improving care and outcomes for children. The milestone reflects the field’s continued evolution and the important role of collaboration in addressing the complex needs of young patients.
“Pediatric rheumatology has advanced through sustained teamwork, innovation, and a shared commitment to improving the lives of children and families,” said Ekemini A. Ogbu, MD, MSc, Chair of the ACR Committee on Pediatric Rheumatology. “As we mark this milestone, we also look ahead to expanding access, strengthening the clinical and research workforce, and building on the progress achieved over the past 50 years.”
The ACR has played a longstanding role in supporting pediatric rheumatology through education, research, and advocacy initiatives. The College continues to promote efforts that advance clinical excellence and improve care for children living with rheumatic disease.
This anniversary also underscores the importance of ongoing collaboration across institutions and disciplines to support the future of pediatric rheumatology. As the sub-specialty enters its next chapter, the ACR remains committed to helping clinicians deliver high-quality care and advancing progress for patients and families.
