Council Description

The Impact Advisory Council consists of passionate brand ambassadors representing the rheumatology community, who are rheumatology patients or caregivers, and/or ACR/ARP members who treat patients. The Council is tasked with increasing the Foundation’s visibility and expanding its reach with patients and clinicians. The Council also provides guidance on how to effectively engage and inform patients and caregivers, advocate for rheumatology research, and elevate the stories and outcomes made possible through Foundation support.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic, audience-informed guidance on RheumLab’s content, usability, and role in research storytelling.
  • Contribute 1–2 pieces of content annually across Foundation platforms and collaborate with staff to refine stories that translate research impact for diverse audiences.
  • Identify funded investigators and awardees to highlight throughout the year and help elevate compelling research stories across meetings, digital platforms, and publications.
  • Advise on themes, stories, and messaging for the Annual Impact Report and Foundation Voice, and review draft materials to ensure clarity, relevance, and resonance with patients and clinicians as needed.
  • Advise on the strategy, positioning, and execution of the RheumChampion influencer program, ensuring brand alignment and expanding reach through content amplification.
  • Provide advisory guidance on the Foundation’s website, offering user-centered feedback to inform content, navigation, and storytelling.

The RRF staff is responsible for the administration and project management of all initiatives and programs.

Time Commitments

ACR Member Council Chair

Virtual

  • Status Calls: Monthly call with staff liaison
  • Meetings: 1-day BOD meeting in August for 1–2 hours
    • Asynchronous Work: About 2–3 hours of prep work before BOD meetings for all BOD members, except the Treasurer (about 3–5 hours of prep work)

In-Person

  • Meetings: 1-day BOD meeting in February, either May/June, in-person during ACR Convergence (October/November)
    • Day of the week may vary, but generally on Saturdays, except during ACR Convergence

Member-at-Large

Virtual

  • Meetings: Participate in 3–4 virtual meetings annually to provide strategic input and guidance; usually held between 4:00 and 5:00 PM ET
  • Asynchronous Work: Approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour per month for asynchronous work, such as reviewing materials, providing written feedback, or contributing content outside of scheduled meetings

In-Person

  • Meetings: Participate in up to 2 in-person meetings held in conjunction with the Foundation’s Investigators Meeting (May or June) and during ACR Convergence; participation by Zoom is available

Recommended Qualifications

Interested participants for this council should have knowledge or experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Lay members or patients with experience in influencer marketing, content creation, or brand advocacy for nonprofit or healthcare organizations
  • Clinicians in Practice (academic, private practice, and community-based); a range of career stages (early, mid-career, and seasoned professionals)
  • Experience providing user-centered feedback on website design, navigation, or content
  • Familiarity with the Foundation, its mission and funding opportunities
  • Understanding of the Foundation’s evolution and impact over time
  • Prior volunteer experience with the Foundation—such as service on a Council, Board, or related volunteer group—is strongly valued
  • Experience serving on the ACR’s Committee on Communications and Marketing or a similar communications-focused group at your institution or practice, or another organization is preferred
